When you approach a cosmetic surgeon for assistance with sagging skin, he/she may recommend either a full facelift or a mini rhytidectomy. For the uninitiated, the choice between the two can be daunting. To help you understand the two procedures better, we’ve listed out some key differences between them:
Nature of surgery
A major surgery, involving a large part of the face being lifted.
A minor surgery, which involves only specific portions of the face being lifted.
Extensiveness of the surgery
The surgeon will make a large incision to lift the entire face. Large sections of muscles and tissues are redistributed, resected, and tightened to give the face an even and shapely look.
The surgeon will identify small sections of the face to be lifted and will only incise those areas of the skin that have been marked. This surgery is highly-localized and only tiny pre-determined portions of the face will be lifted.
Recovery time
Sutures are removed after 1 week. Swelling and bruising reduce within a few weeks, but recovery takes 2-3 months, until the entire face heals.
Sutures are removed after 48 hours. Bruising and swelling will disappear within the week; the other symptoms will reduce within the month.
Duration of results

Up to 1 year (or more if care is taken)

Eligibility Criteria
Patients who fall between the ages of 30 and 65 are eligible for this surgery. However, if you are not a part of this age bracket, do visit Dr. Aminpour for consultation. He will analyze your medical history and requirements and inform you whether you are eligible for the procedure or not.
The Treatment Procedure
The treatment starts with the consultation. Please note that our Los Angeles mini facelift procedure is designed to improve the appearance of your skin; it will not change your facial features or the way you look. It’s important to have an open and honest discussion with the doctor regarding your expectations from the surgery.
When you visit our clinic, Dr. Aminpour will analyze your skin and mark the areas that need treatment. Be sure to inform him about any medical conditions that you have or any treatments that you are under currently, as this will help him choose the surgical approach and decide on the topical numbing cream and post-procedure medication to be used.
The Surgical Procedure
The mini rhytidectomy is a highly personalized treatment which can be designed to suit the unique requirements of your face. Only the areas that need to be treated, will be, leaving the rest of your face as they are – natural and beautiful.
The doctor starts by applying a topical numbing cream or lotion on your face. He will then proceed to make the incision. The mini facelift in Los Angeles takes place as two separate surgeries:
-
The anterior mini facelift
Here, Dr. Aminpour will start by making a tiny incision on your face, near the ears and will continue the incision upwards, towards the hairline. Once incised, the old, sagging tissues will be resected and the skin tightened to prevent sagging. Unlike in a full facelift, the doctor will only move and resect tiny portions of the face, ensuring a highly-targeted treatment.
Skin-friendly, medical-grade sutures will be used to stitch the skin back. These stitches are barely visible to the naked eye and you can be sure that no marks will be visible on your face post-surgery.
-
The posterior mini facelift
This surgery is the second part of the mini facelift and is done to tighten sagging cheeks and jowls. The doctor will start the incision near the ears and will move the incision downwards towards the jowls. The loose tissues will be resected and the sagging skin tightened.
Again, only minor sections of the face will be treated, as opposed to a full rhytidectomy where large sections of the cheek and jowls will be treated.
Dr. Shervin Aminpour believes the best approach to a mini facelift is one that retains the natural beauty of the face. During the surgery, he will stick to the natural lines of your face, ensuring that the natural contours of your face remain.
Post-Treatment Care
The mini facelift is known as the ‘weekend facelift’ for its low downtime. You’ll be expected to avoid all facial movement for 2-3 days, to avoid disturbing the sutures and injuring your face. You are also advised against heading out into the sun for at least a week after the procedure.
After the treatment, you may experience minor post-surgical pain, scarring, and bleeding. But, these symptoms will reduce and disappear a few days after the procedure, leaving your skin healthy and youthful. You may also experience minor tenderness and swelling in the face for a few weeks after the treatment. The doctor will provide pain medication for the same, which needs to be taken for the predetermined duration of the recovery period.
The results of the mini facelift surgery last for up to 6 months to a year, after which you may need to come back for a second consultation. In most cases, Dr. Aminpour will recommend minimally-invasive and non-surgical treatments like neuromuscular modulators, cosmetic dermal fillers, and laser procedures as treatments instead of a second mini facelift.
