What Is a Necklift?
A neck lift, also known as a platysmaplasty (when addressing neck muscles) or cervicoplasty (when addressing neck skin), is usually performed to address sagging neck skin, commonly known as a “turkey neck.” As we age, our faces and necks may respond differently to the process. Some people maintain firmness in their face and lose neck firmness. Others may experience looser skin in the face while their necks remain firm. For patients who primarily experience the effects of aging in the neck, a neck lift at Dr. Aminpour's Los Angeles office can provide cosmetic relief.
Neck lifts can be used to address all issues related to wrinkling and sagging of the neck. Neck lifts are very commonly performed with other procedures to create an overall more balanced and youthful look. These may include a facelift, cheek lift, chin implants or liposuction. You may also opt for injectables to even further reduce the appearance of lines throughout the face.
During a neck lift, not only is loose skin tightened, but neck muscles are also tightened, which is the aspect of the surgery that addresses the banding that can appear gradually over time.
Neck Lift Procedure
Neck lifts are performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia unless otherwise desired or unless you are getting additional procedures performed at the same time. The procedure is accomplished by making small incisions behind the ears, under the chin or both. Dr. Aminpour uses small instruments to tighten the neck muscles and to remove excess neck skin. Permanent sutures are placed to maintain results and impermanent sutures are used to close incisions.

Because excessive sagging, banding and wrinkling of the neck can significantly contribute to our perception of age, a neck lift can produce dramatic and youthful results. Some of the results that can be achieved with a neck lift include:
- Attaining the appearance of more smooth and youthful neck
- Correcting the vertical banding of the neck that has become visible over time
- Addressing loose, sagging skin under the chin and neck

Preparing for Your Neck Lift
As with other cosmetic surgeries, you will need to discuss your current medications and any herbal supplements you are taking with Dr. Aminpour to ensure there are none that may contribute to excessive bleeding or cause other surgical complications. Maintaining a healthy diet will help contribute to healing and ensure your body is in good shape to undergo surgery.
You should plan to spend at least one week away from work and your daily routine. Dr. Aminpour and his staff can provide a list of items you will need prior to your surgery so you are prepared for your recovery. Some of these items include a thermometer, gauze, ice packs, extra towels, loose clothing, supportive pillows and antibacterial ointment.
Neck Lift Recovery & Aftercare
Swelling and bruising are common in the days following a neck lift. You also may experience tightness and some pulling. Other common sensations include burning or tingling. These are all normal side effects and are common during the healing process. Most people return to work about two weeks after their neck lift procedure and it will take several more weeks before they can return to physical activity such as sports or aerobics.
